This course examines effects of various social adversities experienced by ‘’disadvantaged/at-risk’’ populations in early childhood years. Risk factors that social adversities engender as well as protective factors to withstand their negative effects are delineated under each respective adversity. Children of poverty, maltreatment, war/migration, and social exclusion are main focus.

This course is designed to examine children’s rights from a range of theoretical, practical, historical, cultural, and global perspectives and to understand the status of the child under international law, the rights of the child under international human rights conventions, and mechanisms available for enforcing such rights. The course aims to enable students to take account of children's interests, views and rights, and understand the complex relations between the protection, provision and participation rights defined by the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. The course elaborates on selected issues of children’s rights and the key struggles for rights on a national and international level. Throughout the course case studies conducted in a number of countries are explored.
